Our Key Stage One children have a dedicated phonics session four times each week and follow the government’s ‘Letters and Sounds’ document which is complemented with a range of resources and creative, practical activities.
At Oundle CE Primary School, children are exposed to books from a range of schemes and authors such as Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat and Rigby Star. This way children are exposed to a range of styles and do not become over reliant on, and too familiar with, one particular scheme.
Reading in small guided groups happens daily as well as individual reading when appropriate. Year 1 children also participate in peer-paired reading sessions with our older children and during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) aimed at encouraging a love of reading and appealing to different learning styles.
